That was a NON venomous Texas Rat Snake (Elaphe obsoleta lindheimeri). Some people do get these confused with Water Moccasins/Cottonmouths and regular Water Snakes because of their patterns and colors. Texas Rat Snakes can sometimes put on quite a display. That is why some people get them confused with venomous snakes. Snakes are not out to hurt people and will not chase you.
